Behind The Scenes: Community Garden

Jessica Tomasin, festival director, here. One of the things that is filling my cup these days is the Youth Envision Asheville program that Connect Beyond Festival, My Daddy Taught Me That, and Slay the Mic created together this year.

We are creating an immersive art exhibition for the festival this year and teaching kids all sorts of skills in the process of building it. We spent months developing the concept, The Community Garden. What you tend to in your community grows and thrives. What you neglect, withers and dies...and that’s not always a bad thing.

Check it out. It’ll be installed at The Orange Peel May 29th-31st along with a bunch of uplifting music, films, workshops, and more.

The Community Garden
is created by Impractical Instruments, together with a team of creatives from acclaimed organizations such as Meow Wolf, Epic Games and CalArts.

Impractical Instruments is an Asheville-based experiential media company founded by Charlie Huguenard and Jessica Tomasin. We create magical, thought-provoking experiences by blending virtual and physical worlds, transforming play into a powerful tool for learning and connection. Our work invites audiences to engage with pressing real-world issues through curiosity, joy, and hands-on participation.
